IPTV FAQ The basics
Does IPTV come with a TV guide (EPG)?
What is the TV guide on IPTV?
The TV guide on IPTV is a grid of channels and time slots, much like the one on a cable box, built from a data file your provider publishes. Each row is a channel and each block is a show; selecting a block opens its title, start time and a short summary. The technical name is electronic program guide, shortened to EPG in app menus.
Listings travel separately from the video. Your player downloads a guide file, usually in a format called XMLTV, and pairs each entry with a channel through a hidden ID. When the IDs match, the grid fills in. When a channel has no matching ID, its row stays blank or reads "No information", even though the channel itself plays normally.
How do you get the guide on your IPTV app?
How the guide reaches your app depends on the kind of login you received. Xtream Codes logins bring the guide along, so most people never open a setting. M3U playlists sometimes need the guide address added by hand, and MAG or Formuler boxes get it through their portal.
| Login type | How the guide arrives | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Xtream Codes (username, password, server URL) | Downloaded with the channel list | Nothing; allow a minute after the first sign-in |
| M3U playlist link | A separate XMLTV address, or one built into the playlist | Paste the guide address in the EPG or playlist settings |
| Portal URL and MAC address (MAG, Formuler) | Delivered by the portal | Press the Guide or EPG button on the remote |
In TiviMate, the guide sits beside the channel list and refreshes on a schedule you set under Settings, then EPG. In IPTV Smarters, open Live TV and switch to the guide view; a refresh or "Update EPG" option lives in the menu when the grid looks stale. Menu labels change between versions, so look for the words EPG or TV Guide. Our TiviMate setup guide shows the exact screens.
Why is my IPTV guide empty or showing the wrong times?
An empty or shifted IPTV guide nearly always traces back to one of four causes, and each has a quick fix. None of them means the channels are broken.
- The download is not finished. The first load can take a few minutes on slow Wi-Fi. Leave the app open, then reopen the guide.
- The clock or time zone is off. If you live in Vancouver and every show starts three hours early, the device is probably set to Eastern time. Fix the date, time and time zone in the device settings. Leave the app's EPG time offset at zero unless shows are still shifted afterwards.
- The cached guide is old. Run the refresh or update option in the app, or clear the app's cache once.
- That channel carries no listings. Pop-up event channels, pay-per-view feeds and a few small international stations have no guide data at all.
For a guide that stops updating after a few days, our post on fixing an IPTV EPG that will not update goes through every setting worth checking.
Which IPTV has the best EPG?
The best EPG is the one that fills in for the channels you actually watch, several days ahead, inside a player you enjoy using. A long channel list matters less than how many of your everyday channels show real program titles. Two things decide it: the provider's guide data and the app that draws it.
- Coverage: open the guide on your local news, your sports channels and any French or international stations you follow. Count how many say "No information".
- Days ahead: scroll right. A useful guide covers the rest of today and tomorrow at the very least.
- Catch-up markers: on channels with catch-up, a small icon lets you replay a show that already aired. IPTV Jacom offers catch-up on supported channels.
- The player: TiviMate draws a classic cable-style grid, while IPTV Smarters shows a simpler now-and-next list. Same data, different feel.
Your own channel list is the honest test. The free trial runs 24 hours with the full guide switched on, so judge it on a weeknight. To see which groups exist before you start, browse the channel categories.
Related questions people type
Is the TV guide free with IPTV?
Yes. With IPTV Jacom and most paid IPTV services, the guide comes with the subscription at no extra cost. Some third-party players sell premium features, such as a larger grid or recording, but the listings themselves arrive with your login. If a seller asks you to pay separately for an EPG, ask what that fee actually adds before you agree.
How many days ahead does the IPTV guide show?
Usually a few days, though it varies by channel and by app. Large Canadian and American channels tend to carry the longest listings, while smaller foreign stations may only show today. Your player sets its own limit too: several apps let you choose how many days of guide data to keep, which saves memory on older streaming sticks.
Can I record a show from the IPTV guide?
Some players can. TiviMate Premium records from the guide to the device’s storage, and channels with catch-up let you replay recent shows without recording anything. Phone apps and Smart TV players rarely record. Storage is the usual limit, because a Fire TV Stick has little free space, so a USB drive on an Android box suits regular recording better.
Why do some channels say "No information" in the guide?
Because that channel’s guide data is missing or its ID does not match the guide file. The channel still plays. It happens most with event channels, temporary sports feeds and small international stations. If a regular channel you watch daily stays blank after a refresh, send the channel name to Live Chat so the team can check how it is mapped.
