IPTV EPG Not Updating? How to Fix a Blank or Wrong TV Guide

A blank guide, shows listed at the wrong hour, or listings that stop after tomorrow: each has its own cause. Here is how to find it, with the Canadian time zone quirks included.

IPTV TV guide grid on a television with several channels showing no information: fixing an EPG that is not updating

What is an EPG, and where does IPTV guide data come from?

An EPG, or electronic program guide, is the TV guide grid in your player. For IPTV, the guide arrives as a separate data file, usually in a format called XMLTV, listing each channel's shows with start and end times. When the IPTV EPG is not updating, one link in the chain from that file to your screen has broken.

The chain has four links. Your player downloads the guide either automatically, with an Xtream Codes login, or from a separate link that comes with an M3U playlist. After that, it matches channels to guide entries and converts the times to your local clock.

  1. The file. Published by the provider, refreshed regularly, covering a few days ahead.
  2. The download. Done by the player on a schedule, or when you ask it to.
  3. The match. Each channel carries an ID that must equal an ID in the guide file.
  4. The clock. Times in the file carry a time zone, and your device converts them to local time.

Each kind of guide fault traces back to one of those four links, which makes the fault easier to find than it first appears. The format itself is open and documented by the XMLTV project, and the wider idea of an electronic program guide goes back to cable and satellite boxes.

Which EPG problem do you have?

Match what you see to one of six common patterns before changing any settings. A guide that is blank everywhere points to the download. Times that are off by whole hours point to the clock. A guide that empties after a day points to refresh, and channels missing data while others work point to mapping.

Most people have only one of these at a time. If you see two, fix the clock first. A wrong clock can make a perfectly good guide look empty, because the player looks for shows at a time the file does not cover.

How do you fix EPG times that are off by whole hours?

Fix the device's time zone first, then the player's time shift. Set the TV or streaming box to your named time zone with automatic time on. Then open the player's EPG settings and set any time shift to zero. Only if every channel is still off by the same amount should you set a shift in the player.

Canada makes this trickier than most countries, with six time zones and some areas that skip daylight saving. A guide built for Eastern time looks three hours early to a viewer in Vancouver unless the device knows it is in Pacific time. Viewers in Halifax see the opposite, an hour late, when the clock is wrong.

Canadian time zones and what they mean for an IPTV guide
ZoneWhereDaylight savingDifference from Eastern
NewfoundlandNewfoundland and part of LabradorYes1 hour 30 minutes ahead
AtlanticNova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, most of LabradorYes1 hour ahead
EasternMost of Ontario and Quebec, eastern NunavutYesNone
CentralManitoba, northwestern OntarioYes1 hour behind

MountainAlberta, Northwest Territories, parts of eastern BCYes2 hours behind
YukonYukonNo; fixed since 20202 hours behind in winter, 3 in summer
PacificMost of British ColumbiaYes3 hours behind

The half-hour offset in Newfoundland is the reason to fix the device clock rather than the app. Many players only shift the guide in whole hours, so a manual shift can never be right there. A correctly set device zone handles it automatically.

Want to see a guide that is already set up properly? The IPTV Jacom free trial uses an Xtream Codes login, so the guide arrives with the channels and there is no separate link to manage. It runs 24 hours, long enough to watch the guide refresh overnight and confirm the times match your province.

Where the time zone lives on each device

  • Fire TV: Settings, Preferences, Time Zone.
  • Android TV and Google TV: Settings, System, Date & time, then choose the zone and keep automatic time on.
  • Samsung: Settings, General, System Manager, Time, Clock.
  • LG: Settings, General, System, Time & Date.

Inside the player, IPTV Smarters calls the setting EPG Timeshift in its settings menu. TiviMate keeps a time shift option with each EPG source under Settings, EPG. Leave both at zero unless the device clock is already right and the guide is still off by the same amount everywhere.

Is the EPG source URL correct?

With an Xtream Codes login, the player fetches the guide from the same server automatically, so there is no separate link to check. With an M3U playlist, the guide comes from its own XMLTV link, and that link must contain your current username and password. After a renewal or password change, an old guide link silently stops working.

On many panels, the guide link follows a standard pattern: the server address and port, then /xmltv.php, then your username and password as parameters. Support can send the exact link for your account. To test it, paste it into a browser on a computer. A working link downloads or displays a long XML file, while a broken one shows an error or an empty page.

How often should the EPG refresh, and how do you force it?

Set the guide to refresh once a day. Guide files usually cover a few days ahead, so a player that never refreshes runs out of listings within a day or two. When something looks wrong, force a manual refresh before changing anything else. It takes a minute and fixes a surprising number of blank guides.

Many TV devices pause apps in the background to save memory. A player that is never fully closed may skip its scheduled refresh. Once a week, close the player fully, or restart the device, so it starts fresh and downloads the latest guide on launch. Our walkthrough of TiviMate setup on Firestick shows the TiviMate EPG screens step by step.

Refreshing or reloading the guide never touches your plan or login. Each screen keeps its own copy of the guide, and an IPTV Jacom subscription can cover 1 to 5 screens on one account. Set the refresh on every device, not only the living-room one.

When should you clear old guide data?

Clear old guide data when the grid shows shows from yesterday, mixes old and new listings, or keeps a wrong time after you fixed the clock. Players store the guide locally, and that copy can get stuck. Removing it forces a clean download, which fixes most stale-guide problems in a few minutes.

  1. Delete the guide inside the player

In TiviMate, remove the EPG source and add it again. In IPTV Smarters, reload the EPG from the Live TV section. Either way, the player throws away its stored copy.

  2. Clear the app cache on the device

On Fire TV, go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, choose the player, then Clear cache. On Android TV, the same option sits under Settings, Apps. Never pick Clear data, which erases your login.

  3. Restart and wait

Restart the device, open the player and give the guide a few minutes to download. A full guide for a large list is a big file, so the first load is slower than usual.

Why do some channels have no guide while others are fine?

When only some channels are blank, the problem is channel mapping. Every channel in your list carries an ID, and the player looks for the same ID in the guide file. If a channel was renamed, added recently or has no matching entry, the player finds nothing and shows "No information" for that channel alone.

Canadian channel lists add a twist: regional feeds. Many networks run separate Eastern and Pacific feeds, or local versions for Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. If a Pacific feed is matched to Eastern listings, that one channel looks three hours off while the rest of the guide is right. The fix belongs in the mapping, not your clock.

  • Report it. Send support the exact channel names that are blank or offset. Providers fix mapping on their side, and the fix reaches every customer.
  • Map it yourself, if your player allows it. TiviMate lets you pick guide data for a single channel from its channel options, a feature tied to Premium in recent versions.
  • Use the right regional feed. If your list has both an East and a West version of a channel, the one for your region usually carries the matching guide.

Simpler players such as most Smart TV apps do not offer manual mapping, so reporting the channel is the only route. Our TiviMate guide shows where the per-channel options sit, and the answer to whether IPTV has a TV guide explains how guide data is supplied in the first place.

What should you send support if the guide is still wrong?

Send support your device, player app, login type, time zone and the exact channels affected, plus a photo of the guide next to what is really on air. Those details let the agent see in minutes whether the fault sits in the guide file, the mapping or the settings on your TV.

  • Device and model year, for example Fire TV Stick 4K Max or a 2021 Samsung TV.
  • Player app and version, from its settings or about screen.
  • Login type: Xtream Codes, M3U with a separate guide link, or portal.
  • The time zone set on the device, and your city.
  • Two or three channel names that show the problem, and one that looks right.

Live Chat answers every day, 9 a.m. until midnight ET, in English and French. Guide problems are among the quickest to solve once support can see the full picture, and most are settled in a single conversation.

TV guide problems: reader questions

Why does my IPTV guide say "No information"?

"No information" means the player could not find guide data for that channel. Either the guide has not downloaded yet, the download is out of date, or the channel is not matched to an entry in the guide file. If every channel says it, refresh the EPG and check the source. If only a few do, the cause is channel mapping.

Why is my IPTV guide one hour off after the clocks change?

A one-hour error right after a daylight saving change usually comes from a fixed offset on the TV instead of a named zone. A manual time shift in the player causes the same thing. Set the device to your named zone, such as Eastern or Pacific, with automatic time turned on. Then set the time shift in the player back to zero.

How many days ahead does an IPTV guide show?

Most IPTV guides show listings for a few days ahead, though the exact span depends on the provider and the channel. Some channels publish a week of data, others only a day or two. If the guide goes blank after tomorrow on every channel, the player has stopped refreshing, so set it to update daily.
