IPTV Black Screen or No Sound? How to Fix It on Any Device
A channel that opens to black, or plays with no audio, is almost always a setting between the app and your TV. Here is how to find which one, from decoders to HDMI.

Why does IPTV show a black screen or play with no sound?
An IPTV black screen or silent channel usually means the app is receiving data but cannot turn it into picture or sound on your TV. The cause is typically a decoder setting, an audio format your TV or soundbar rejects, an HDMI handshake problem, a cluttered app cache, or a stream format your player handles poorly.
The good news is that none of these need new equipment. They are settings, and the remote reaches nearly all of them without a computer. The table below matches what you see to where to look first.
| Symptom | Probable cause | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen, sound plays | Video codec not decoded | Switch hardware and software decoding |
| Picture plays, no sound on some channels | Dolby audio sent to a device that cannot decode it | Set audio to Stereo or PCM |
| Picture plays, wrong language or silence | Wrong or empty audio track selected | Pick another audio track in the player |
| Black screen on every channel and every app | HDMI or display handshake | Power-cycle the TV and device, try another port |
| Black screen only on 4K channels | Device, cable or HDMI port not set for 4K | Enable the enhanced HDMI mode on the TV |
| Worked yesterday, black today | Corrupted cache or an app update | Clear the cache, then restart |
Is the problem one channel or every channel?
Check a second and third channel before changing anything. If only one channel is black or silent, the problem is probably that channel's feed, and support can check it or point you to a backup version. If every channel fails, the cause sits in your device, the player app or the login, and the fixes in this post apply.
Large lists often repeat a station two or three times, as HD, Full HD or a backup feed. When one version stays black, try another before you report it. Jot down which station, which version and what time it failed. That note lets support check the exact feed quickly.
A black screen on every channel can also mean the login itself stopped working. Players sometimes show black instead of an error when a subscription has expired or the server refused the connection. Our explainer on IPTV HTTP 403 and 500 errors shows how to tell a login problem from a playback one.
Hardware or software decoding: which should you use?
Use hardware decoding by default, and switch to software decoding when a specific channel stays black or shows green blocks. Hardware decoding uses the video chip in your device and handles 4K and HEVC efficiently. Software decoding uses the main processor, which copes with unusual streams better but can stutter on a small streaming stick.
| Decoder | Strengths | Weaknesses | Try it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Smooth 4K and HEVC, low heat, little battery use on phones | Some odd stream formats show black or freeze | Always first; it is the normal setting |
| Software | Plays more unusual formats, handles some interlaced channels better | Heavy on small sticks, may stutter on 4K | One channel stays black or blocky on hardware |
| Hardware+ (some players) | Hardware decoding with extra compatibility handling | Not offered in every app | Hardware fails and software stutters |
Where the switch lives depends on the player. In IPTV Smarters Pro it sits in the player settings, often labelled as the decoder or hardware acceleration option. In VLC for Android, open Settings, Video, Hardware acceleration and try Disabled or Decoding. TiviMate keeps most of its playback options under Settings, Playback, and the names change between versions.
Make a single change, then replay the channel that failed. Switching three things at once may fix the problem, but you will not know which change did it, and the next time the fix will take three times as long. Our IPTV Smarters Pro setup walkthrough shows each settings screen if you need a map.
To rule out the app entirely, try the same login in a second player. Still choosing a provider? The IPTV Jacom free trial runs 24 hours with the full list. That is enough time to compare two apps on the same TV and see which one plays every channel cleanly.
Why is there no sound, and how does audio passthrough affect it?
No sound on some channels usually comes from audio passthrough. Many channels carry Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus audio. With passthrough on, your device sends that audio untouched to the TV or soundbar, and if nothing in the chain can decode it, you hear nothing. Switching the device to Stereo or PCM fixes it.
Settings to change on the streaming device
- Fire TV: Settings, Display & Sounds, Audio, then set Surround Sound to Stereo. If sound returns, try Best Available again later with the TV's audio output set to Auto.
- Android TV and Google TV: Settings, Display & Sound, Advanced sound settings, then Select formats and choose None or set the formats manually.
- VLC on Android: Settings, Audio, then turn off Audio digital output (passthrough).
Settings to change on the TV
If a soundbar is connected by HDMI ARC or eARC, the TV's digital output setting matters too. On Samsung TVs, look under Sound, Expert Settings, Digital Output Audio Format. On LG TVs, look under Sound for Digital Sound Out. Set it to PCM to test, then try Auto once sound works.
Sound that plays but drifts out of step with lips is a different problem. Fire TV offers AV Sync Tuning under Settings, Display & Sounds, Audio on recent software, and most soundbars have a lip-sync or audio delay control. If only one channel drifts, the offset is in that feed, so report it rather than retuning your whole system.
Could the HDMI connection be causing the black screen?
Yes, if every app shows black, not only the IPTV player. HDMI carries a copy-protection handshake called HDCP, and when the TV and device fail to agree, the screen goes black. A power-cycle in the right order fixes most of these, followed by a different HDMI port, the right cable and the TV's enhanced HDMI mode for 4K.
Power-cycle in order
Turn the TV off. Pull the streaming device's power plug and count to 30. Plug it back in, wait for its light, then turn the TV on. This forces a fresh handshake.
Try another HDMI port and skip the extras
Plug the device straight into the TV, not through a receiver or switch. Then try a second port. Older AV receivers are a frequent cause of black screens with newer 4K devices.
Turn on the enhanced HDMI mode for 4K
Samsung calls it Input Signal Plus, under Connection or External Device Manager. LG calls it HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour, under the HDMI settings in General or Devices. Enable it for the port your device uses.
Reset the resolution if the screen stays black
On most Fire TV remotes, hold Up and Rewind together for several seconds. The stick then cycles through resolutions until you confirm one that displays.
4K channels need a capable cable: the one in the device's box, or one labelled Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed. An old cable from a DVD player may carry 1080p fine and fail on 4K channels only, which looks exactly like a channel fault.
If your TV is old and HDMI trouble keeps coming back, a new streaming stick is usually cheaper than a new TV, and your channels move with you. Every IPTV Jacom subscription works on any supported device, so swapping hardware never means paying again. Support can help you sign in on the new device during chat hours.
How do you clear the app cache without losing your login?
Clear the cache, never the data. Clearing the cache removes temporary files that can corrupt after an update, while your login, playlist and favourites stay in place. Clearing data erases everything and sends you back to the login screen. The path differs on each platform, as the table shows.
| Platform | Path | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV | Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, the app, Clear cache | Skip Clear data unless support asks |
| Android TV and Google TV | Settings, Apps, See all apps, the app, Clear cache | Restart the app afterwards |
| Samsung (recent models) | Settings, Support, Device Care, Manage Storage, the app, View details, Clear cache | Older models have no per-app option |
| LG (webOS) | No per-app cache option | Cut power to the TV for a full minute, or turn off Quick Start+ under General |
| Apple TV | No cache option | Force-close the app, or delete and reinstall it |
After clearing, open the app and let it rebuild the channel list and guide. The first launch is slower than usual, which is normal. If the black screen came back after an app update, check the update notes for a moved setting before assuming the worst.
Should you change the stream format from TS to HLS, or back?
Yes, switching between TS and HLS is one of the most effective fixes for channels that stay black in one app. TS, short for MPEG transport stream, sends one continuous stream. HLS cuts the stream into short segments listed in a playlist file. Some TV apps and older devices handle one format far better than the other.
Smarters users will find the switch at Settings, Stream Format: choose MPEGTS or HLS instead of Default. With an M3U playlist, ask support for a version of the link in the other format. The MPEG transport stream format dates from broadcast TV, while HTTP Live Streaming, documented by Apple, was built for the web, which is why Apple devices tend to prefer HLS.
A format change costs nothing and leaves your plan untouched. If your app has no format switch, IPTV Jacom support can send a playlist link in the other format in a few minutes during chat hours. Try each format on the failing channel for a full minute before you judge it.
In what order should you try these fixes?
Go from the quickest, safest change to the slowest. Test another channel, restart the app, clear the cache, switch the decoder, set audio to Stereo, switch the stream format, then power-cycle the HDMI chain. Stop as soon as the picture and sound return, and note which step worked for next time.
- Try two other channels, plus any alternate feed of the one that fails.
- Close the player fully and reopen it.
- Clear the app cache, not its data.
- Switch between hardware and software decoding.
- Set the device audio to Stereo or PCM, and check the audio track.
- Move from TS to HLS, or from HLS to TS.
- Power-cycle the TV and device, then try another HDMI port.
- Contact support with the channel names, device, app and the steps you tried.
If the whole service seems to stop for everyone at once, the answer to why IPTV goes down covers outages and server changes. For anything else, Live Chat runs every day, 9 a.m. until midnight ET, in English and French. A list of the steps you already tried lets the agent skip straight to the next one.
Black screen and sound problems: reader questions
What causes sound but no picture on an IPTV channel?
Sound with no picture usually means the video uses a format your player is not decoding, often HEVC (H.265) on an older device or with the wrong decoder setting. Switch the player from hardware to software decoding, or the other way round, and try again. If only one channel does it, report it to support, because that feed may be broken at the source.
Why does IPTV have no sound through my soundbar?
The usual reason is audio passthrough. The streaming device sends Dolby audio as-is, and the soundbar or the TV link between them cannot handle it. Set the streaming device to Stereo, or set the TV's digital audio output to PCM, and the sound returns. Then try Auto again later to see whether your setup can handle surround.
Will reinstalling the IPTV app fix a black screen?
Reinstalling can help, but it belongs near the end of the list. A fresh install erases your login and favourites, and most black screens are fixed by a decoder change, an audio setting or clearing the cache. Work through those first. Reinstall only if the app crashes or every channel stays black after a full restart of the device.
