Restart or factory reset: which one does your Chromecast need?

Almost always a restart. A restart closes every app, empties the memory and starts Google TV fresh, and it deletes nothing. A factory reset erases the whole device back to the day you bought it. Reach for the reset only after two restarts have failed, or when the device is stuck in a loop and cannot reach its menus.

Think of it as a ladder. Each step down costs more time and undoes more of your setup, so start at the top and stop as soon as the problem is gone.

Most freezes, slow menus and apps that refuse to open are cured by the first four rows. Rows five and six are for problems that survive a restart, such as an app that crashes the moment it opens or a device that boots into a loop.

How to restart Chromecast with Google TV: three ways

There are three ways to restart a Chromecast with Google TV: from the Settings menu, by pulling the power cable, or from the Google Home app on your phone. The menu route is the cleanest. Unplugging is the answer when the screen is frozen. The phone app helps when the remote is missing or out of battery.

  1. From the Settings menu

On the home screen, select your profile picture or initial at the top right, then Settings. Choose System, then Restart, and confirm with Restart again. The screen goes dark, the Google TV logo appears, and you are back on the home screen in about a minute.

  2. By pulling the power

Unplug the power cable from the Chromecast itself or from the wall, not the HDMI end. Wait 30 to 60 seconds so the device fully loses power, then plug it back in. Use this when the picture is frozen and the remote does nothing.

  3. From the Google Home app

On a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi, open the Google Home app and select the Chromecast. Open its settings with the gear icon, then look under the three-dot menu for Restart or Reboot. Google moves these labels between app versions, so look around the device settings page if the wording differs.

How often should you restart? Once a week is plenty for a device that runs every day. A Chromecast left on for months collects background processes that slow the menus, and a weekly restart prevents the slow creep before you notice it.

Google TV Streamer: restart and reset differences

The Google TV Streamer restarts and resets through the same menus as the Chromecast with Google TV: Settings, System, Restart, and Settings, System, About, Factory reset. The differences are in the hardware. The Streamer sits beside the TV instead of hanging behind it, has a wired Ethernet port, and has far more storage.

Google launched the Streamer in 2024 as the successor to the Chromecast line, and stopped making new Chromecasts at that point. Existing Chromecast with Google TV units keep working and receive updates for a period Google decides. Both run the same Google TV interface, so menu names match in almost every case.

Two things matter for IPTV. First, the Streamer’s larger storage means a low-storage slowdown is rare, so a restart fixes more of its problems than on the older Chromecast. Second, the Ethernet port gives you a steadier connection for live sports. If the Streamer buffers on Wi-Fi, try a cable before any reset.

The button on the back of the Streamer can also start a reset when the menus are unreachable. Google’s exact button steps differ between devices and can change with updates, so check the current instructions in the Google Chromecast and Google TV help centre before you hold it down.

Chromecast frozen? What to try before a reset

When a Chromecast is frozen, check the power and the remote before anything else, then restart, then work on the single app that misbehaves. A factory reset is the last step, not the first. Most frozen screens come from a weak power supply, a remote that lost its pairing, or one app stuck in memory.

Re-pairing the voice remote

Hold Back and Home together until the small light on the remote pulses, then follow the prompt on the TV. If the TV shows nothing, the Chromecast may be the frozen part, not the remote: unplug it, plug it back in, and repeat the pairing while the home screen loads. You can also pair from Settings, Remotes & Accessories, Pair remote or accessory.

Clearing one stuck app

The cache steps on Google TV mirror those on a Fire TV Stick, only the menu words change. Go to Settings, Apps, See all apps, choose the app, then Force stop and Clear cache. Our guide on clearing cache without losing your IPTV login explains when Clear data is worth it and what you must have ready before pressing it.

Checking storage on Google TV

Go to Settings, System, Storage to see how much space is left. A Chromecast with Google TV has 8 GB in total, and the system takes a large share before you install anything. When free space drops below about 1 GB, app updates start to fail and players can freeze while saving the guide. Uninstall apps nobody opens before you think about a reset; a reset frees the same space but costs you every login.

If you are still choosing a device or a player, a free trial login lets you test both on your own Chromecast before you pay anything.

How to factory reset Chromecast with Google TV

To factory reset a Chromecast with Google TV, go to Settings, System, About, Factory reset, choose Factory reset again, then Erase everything. If the menus will not open, hold the button on the back of the device while it is powered until the light blinks yellow and turns white. Either route wipes every app, account and setting.

Before you reset: gather these first

  • Your IPTV login: username, password and server URL, or the M3U link, from your welcome email or WhatsApp message
  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password
  • Your Google account email and password, plus the phone that receives sign-in codes
  • The login for any paid player account, such as a premium licence tied to an email
  • Photos of your player settings: decoder, buffer, audio, guide time offset and favourites
  • The Google Home app on your phone, which most setups use

Photos of your settings screens take two minutes and save half an hour of guessing later. Players spread their options over several pages, and after a reset every one returns to its default.

The reset itself

  1. Open Settings from your profile picture at the top right.
  2. Choose System, then About.
  3. Scroll down to Factory reset, select it, and choose Factory reset on the next screen.
  4. Confirm with Erase everything. The device restarts and shows the setup screen a few minutes later.

For the button route, keep the Chromecast plugged into power and the TV. Press and hold the button on the back. The light starts blinking yellow; when it turns solid white, let go and the reset begins. Do not unplug the device while it erases, because a cut in power during a reset can leave it unable to start.

A reset fixes software problems only. Some signs point to failing hardware instead: the device runs very hot, the light never comes on, or it dies on several different power adapters. In those cases a reset cannot help, and the device needs replacing.

How do you restart an older Chromecast without a remote?

An older Chromecast without a remote, such as the third generation or the Ultra, restarts from the Google Home app or by unplugging it for a minute. It has no menus on the TV and no app store. To reset it, hold the button on the device until the light starts flashing, then let go once it turns white.

The hold time depends on the generation. Depending on the model, it can take up to about 25 seconds before the light changes, so keep holding until you see it change rather than counting. The device must stay plugged into power the whole time.

These older models matter for IPTV because nothing installs on them. The player runs on your phone or tablet, and the Chromecast only shows what you send. Your player needs a cast icon for that, and not every IPTV app has one. Casting also means the phone stays busy, so a call or a low battery can interrupt the game.

If you watch IPTV every day on an older Chromecast, a device with its own apps is a real upgrade. The player runs on the TV, the phone stays free, and the remote changes channels the way cable used to.

Chromecast configuration after a reset: putting your IPTV app back

After a factory reset, configure the Chromecast in this order: Google setup, system and app updates, the IPTV player, your login, the guide, then your player settings. Doing updates first avoids a second round of restarts halfway through. Plan for about half an hour in total.

Google TV is one of the easier devices for Canadian IPTV, because the main players install straight from the Play Store and the remote handles a channel guide well. The steps below get you from a blank device to live channels.

  1. Finish the Google setup

Follow the prompts on screen, usually with the Google Home app on your phone. Choose the full Google TV setup. The basic TV option skips your Google account and leaves you with no app store, so no IPTV player.

  2. Update the system

Go to Settings, System, About, System update. Install anything offered and let the device restart.

  3. Update the apps

Open the Play Store, select your profile picture, and open the section that manages apps and updates. Run all updates before you add the player.

  4. Install the IPTV player

Search the Play Store for your player. If it is not listed there, enable installs from unknown sources: select Settings, System, About, then press Android TV OS build seven times. Then open Settings, Apps, Security & Restrictions, Unknown sources, and allow the app you use to install it.

  5. Enter your login

Choose Xtream Codes and type the username, password and server URL, or paste the M3U link. Copy every character from your welcome message, including the port number after the colon.

  6. Let the guide load, then restore settings

Give the guide a few minutes to fill. Then put back the settings from your photos: decoder, buffer, audio output and guide time offset.

For TiviMate, the TiviMate installation guide shows each screen in order. If the guide stays empty or shows the wrong hours after setup, the guide on EPG problems covers time offsets and refresh settings.

Adding a wired connection while you are at it

A reset is a good moment to move the Chromecast with Google TV onto a cable. It has no Ethernet port of its own. Google has sold an Ethernet power adapter that powers it and adds a wired port in one box, and third-party USB-C hubs with power pass-through do the same job.

Once connected, Settings, Network & Internet shows Ethernet as the active connection. The Google TV Streamer needs no adapter: plug the cable into its back.

A cable helps most during live sports in the evening, when the Wi-Fi in a busy building is crowded. It does nothing for a problem that lives in the account or the stream, so treat it as an upgrade, not a repair.

Settings worth checking after every reset

Three groups of settings go back to default, and each can make a good stream look or sound wrong. First, the video decoder in the player: if a channel showed a black or green picture before, read our explanation of hardware and software decoding in IPTV players. Second, sound: Settings, Display & Sound, Advanced sound settings controls surround formats. If voices drift away from lips after the reset, the lip sync fix for IPTV goes step by step.

Third, any paid player licence. Some premium licences need you to sign in again after a reset, and some per-device activations are tied to the device’s identity. Our comparison of free and paid IPTV players explains how each licence type behaves when a device is reset or replaced.

Your subscription itself is untouched by a reset. All IPTV subscription plans count screens playing at the same moment, from 1 to 5 depending on the plan you chose, and the same login works again on the freshly set-up Chromecast.

When restarting or resetting will not help

A restart or a reset will not fix problems that start outside the Chromecast. Think of a busy home network, an account that has run out, a single channel that is down, or a TV with a failing HDMI port. Resetting for those costs half an hour and changes nothing, so run three quick checks first.

  • Does the same problem happen on another device? Try your phone on the same Wi-Fi with the same login. If it fails there too, the Chromecast is not the cause.
  • Does it affect one channel or all of them? One channel down is a stream issue. Every channel down at once points to the network or the account.
  • Does it happen at one time of day? Trouble only between 7 and 11 p.m. usually means a busy network, which no reset changes.

Account problems show up as messages, not freezes: invalid login, account expired, or too many connections. Check the end date in your welcome message first. Then contact IPTV Jacom Live Chat with the exact wording on screen; the team answers every day, 9 a.m. until midnight ET in English and French.

Background on the Chromecast line and how it led to the Google TV Streamer is on the Chromecast article on Wikipedia. For daily use, the short version holds: restart weekly, reset rarely, and keep your login details somewhere you can find them.

Questions about restarting and resetting a Chromecast

Does restarting a Chromecast delete anything?

No. Restarting a Chromecast with Google TV, from the menu or by unplugging it, deletes nothing. Apps, logins, favourites and settings all stay. A restart only empties the working memory and starts the software fresh, which is why it clears most freezes. Only a factory reset erases data, and Google TV asks you to confirm twice before it does.

How long does a factory reset of Chromecast with Google TV take?

The erase itself usually takes a few minutes, but plan for about half an hour in total. After the reset you sign in to Google again, join Wi-Fi, accept updates and reinstall your apps. Adding the IPTV player, the login and the guide takes another 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of your channel list.

Can I restart a Chromecast without the remote?

Yes. Pull the Chromecast’s power cable from the adapter or wall, wait 30 to 60 seconds and plug it back in. You can also restart it from the device settings in the Google Home app on a phone that shares its Wi-Fi. Google’s phone apps include an on-screen remote too, which helps while the real one is lost or flat.

Will my IPTV subscription stop working after a factory reset?

No. Your IPTV subscription is tied to your login, not to the Chromecast, so a reset neither ends nor shortens it. Reinstall the player, enter the same username, password and server URL from your welcome message, and the channels come back. If the app reports too many connections at first, close it on other screens and try again a few minutes later.
