IPTV FAQ The basics
How much data does IPTV use?
How many GB per hour does IPTV use?
IPTV uses between about 1 GB and 11 GB per hour, depending on the picture quality of the channel. The number comes straight from the stream's bitrate: each 1 Mbps of video equals about 0.45 GB per hour, because one megabit per second over 3,600 seconds is 3,600 megabits, or 450 megabytes.
| Quality | Typical bitrate | Data per hour | A 3-hour hockey game |
|---|---|---|---|
| SD (480p) | 1.5 to 2.5 Mbps | 0.7 to 1.1 GB | 2 to 3 GB |
| HD (720p) | 3 to 5 Mbps | 1.4 to 2.3 GB | 4 to 7 GB |
| Full HD (1080p) | 5 to 8 Mbps | 2.3 to 3.6 GB | 7 to 11 GB |
| 4K (2160p) | 15 to 25 Mbps | 7 to 11 GB | 20 to 34 GB |
These are typical ranges, not measurements of a particular channel. Sports and 4K feeds sit at the top of each range, because fast motion needs more data. For comparison, Netflix lists up to about 3 GB per hour for HD and 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD on its highest setting.
How much data does IPTV use in a month?
A month of IPTV can use anything from about 30 GB to more than 800 GB, and the number of screens playing at once matters as much as picture quality. Multiply hours per day by 30, then by the GB per hour for your usual quality.
| Household | Viewing | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Phone on the commute | 1 hour a day in SD (1 GB an hour) | about 30 GB |
| Light viewer | 1 TV, 2 hours a day in HD (2 GB an hour) | about 120 GB |
| Evening household | 1 TV, 4 hours a day in Full HD (3 GB an hour) | about 360 GB |
| Two rooms | 2 TVs, 4 hours a day each in Full HD (3 GB an hour) | about 720 GB |
| Sports fan in 4K | 1 TV, 3 hours a day in 4K (9 GB an hour) | about 810 GB |
Many cable and fibre plans in Canadian cities now include unlimited data, so these totals only bite on capped plans. Your provider's usage meter, checked after a normal week, gives the real figure for your home.
Does an IPTV box use data when you are not watching?
An IPTV box uses data only while it streams, plus a little in the background for guide and app updates. The catch: a box keeps streaming if you switch off the TV but leave a channel playing on the box. Many TVs cut the picture without telling the box to stop, so a Full HD channel can run all night and quietly use 20 GB or more.
Press Back or Home before turning off the TV, or put the box to sleep with its own remote. On a Fire TV Stick or Android TV device, turning on HDMI-CEC lets the TV and the stick power down together.
Will IPTV work with Xplore (formerly Xplornet)?
IPTV can work with Xplore, the rural internet provider formerly called Xplornet, but it depends on which connection you have and its data allowance. Fibre and solid fixed-wireless plans that hold 25 Mbps or more in the evening usually carry a Full HD channel well. Older satellite plans are the hard case.
- Data allowance: check whether your plan is unlimited. A cap of a few hundred gigabytes runs out fast at 3 GB an hour.
- Evening speed: run a speed test around 8 p.m., when rural towers are busiest, not in the morning.
- Delay: traditional geostationary satellite adds noticeable lag, which can cause buffering when you change channels.
The same checks apply to any rural line. Our guide to internet speed for IPTV in Canada gives the speed each TV needs, and the free trial lets you watch for 24 hours on your own connection before paying.
How can you make IPTV use less data?
Lowering picture quality is the biggest saving, since Full HD uses roughly half as much again as HD, and 4K about three times Full HD.
- Choose the HD or SD version of a channel when one is listed, especially on phones and tablets.
- Save 4K for the games and films where it really shows.
- Stop playback before switching off the TV.
- Use Wi-Fi rather than cellular on phones; see IPTV on iPhone and iPad for mobile tips.
- Count your screens: two TVs playing at once double the data, as explained in using IPTV on several devices.
Related questions people type
Does IPTV use data?
Yes. IPTV streams every channel over your internet connection, so each minute of viewing counts toward your data use, exactly like Netflix or YouTube. On an unlimited home plan you will not notice. On a capped home plan or on cellular data, a single evening of Full HD viewing can use 10 GB or more.
How many GB do I need per month for IPTV?
Plan for at least 300 GB a month if one TV plays IPTV for three to four hours each evening in Full HD, and double that for two TVs. Add more if you watch sports in 4K. If your internet cap sits below those numbers, an unlimited plan is usually a better buy than cutting back on viewing.
Does pausing live TV use data?
In most players, pausing a live channel stops or slows the download once a small buffer fills, so a paused channel uses little data. Leaving a channel playing with the TV switched off is different: the stream keeps downloading at full rate. Back out to the menu or put the device to sleep when you walk away.
Is 4K IPTV worth the extra data?
Only when the channel is produced in 4K and your screen is large enough to show the difference, roughly 55 inches and up. 4K uses about three times the data of Full HD, so on a capped plan it is best kept for big games and films. On unlimited internet with 25 Mbps or more of steady speed, there is no reason to hold back.
